Knowing When to Buy New Tires

When is the last time you looked at your car's wheels? Tires don't last forever, and you shouldn't wait for a mishap before getting a new set. Here are some tips to know when to get new tires.

Tip one is to use a penny to check tire tread. Put it in the groove with Lincoln's head pointed toward the tire. If his entire head is visible, that tire is in bad shape. At least part of Mr. Lincoln's head should be concealed, so if it's not, you probably need to replace that tire. Do the same penny trick for all tires. A second tip is look for "wear bars." Modern wheels have this feature, which reveals a cross-tire pattern when the tread wears too low.
